Nyale Institute Calls for Urgent Action to Protect Sexual Violence Survivors During 16 Days of Activism

Nyale Institute has called for urgent action to protect survivors of sexual violence during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Despite Malawi’s strong legal frameworks, many survivors—especially children—continue to face barriers when seeking essential healthcare. Nyale Institute highlights forced pregnancy as an overlooked form of gender-based violence, particularly when survivors of rape, defilement, or incest are denied lawful medical care.
Nyale Institute welcomes the recent High Court ruling in AC (a Minor) v Ministry of Health and Others, which affirmed that survivors of sexual violence have the right to access safe abortion under the Gender Equality Act. However, the organisation warns that without coordinated action from key ministries and the Malawi Human Rights Commission, this victory risks remaining symbolic.
The Institute urges all sectors to uphold justice, dignity, and bodily autonomy. No survivor of sexual violence should be denied the healthcare rights guaranteed by law.
