Nyale Institute Re-launches “Mwana wa Mzako Ngwako Yemwe” Campaign and Introduces Toll-Free SRHR Hotline in Mulanje

Nyale Institute for Sexual and Reproductive Health Governance today successfully re-launched the “Mwana wa Mzako Ngwako Yemwe” campaign and introduced its toll-free SRHRhotline (0982037373) at Senior GVH Lobeni ground in Mulanje District.

The phrase “Mwana wa Mzako Ngwako Yemwe,” meaning “your neighbour’s child is also your own,” underscores the campaign’s central message of collective responsibility. It calls on communities to take an active role in protecting and supporting children particularly adolescent girls by ensuring their safety, dignity and access to essential services and information.

The re-launch comes at a time when many young people especially the girl child continue to face barriers in accessing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). These challenges include stigma, limited access to accurate information and restricted availability of youth-friendly services. The campaign therefore places strong emphasis on empowering girls with knowledge, promoting their rights and encouraging communities to create supportive environments where they can thrive.

The introduction of the Nyale Institute hotline marks a significant step towards improving access to SRHR services. The toll-free line provides a safe and confidential platform where individuals can access information, seek legal guidance, report concerns and receive referrals to appropriate support services.

The event was graced by key leaders and stakeholders including:

  • GVH Lobeni
  • Senior Chief Chikumbu (Girls Reproductive Justice Ambassador for Nyale Institute)
  • Mulanje District Council Chair
  • Director of Social Welfare

In her remarks, Senior Chief Chikumbu highlighted her role as a Girls Reproductive Justice Ambassador emphasizing her responsibility to champion the rights of girls within her jurisdiction. She spoke about her duties in promoting access to SRHR information and services, addressing harmful cultural practices, encouraging girls’ education and working closely with community structures to ensure that cases affecting girls are reported and handled appropriately. She called on fellow leaders and community members to actively protect girls and uphold their rights.

Additional participants included representatives from the District Health Management Team, traditional leaders, youths and media partners, all of whom play a critical role in advancing SRHR at community level.

Highlights of the event included stakeholder remarks, youth and health perspectives, cultural performances, a drama presentation and a live demonstration of the hotline. Throughout the event, emphasis was placed on the need to protect the girl child from harmful practices, promote access to education and health services and ensure that her rights are upheld.

This initiative is expected to increase community awareness, strengthen protection systems and improve access to SRHR information and services, particularly for adolescent girls.

Nyale Institute remains committed to advancing SRHR through community engagement, advocacy and accessible support systems that empower young people especially girls to make informed decisions about their health and future.
