Goal:

Improve sexual and reproductive health services for adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in Malawi, in alignment with the Gender Equality Act and the 2024 National SRHR Policy.

Objectives:

  1. Enhance legal and policy advocacy for access to safe abortion.
  2. Reduce stigma around legal abortion access.
  3. Empower AGYW to advocate for the decriminalization of abortion.

Target Beneficiaries:

  • Direct: Adolescent girls, young women
  • Indirect: Parents, guardians, adolescent boys, young men, traditional leaders, SRHR-focused community organizations

The project aims to address the barriers that AGYW face in accessing safe, legal abortion in Malawi. While Malawi’s legal framework offers some provisions for abortion in certain cases, confusion and stigma still hinder its accessibility. With a focus on legal and policy advocacy, we work with government bodies, human rights organizations, and community leaders to ensure safe abortion services are available and understood. Through dialogue, community engagement, and capacity-building of AGYW, this initiative seeks to reduce stigma and create a more supportive environment for reproductive rights.

Key Stakeholders:

  • Regional: African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (CERWC)
  • National: Ministries of Health, Gender, Justice, Malawi Human Rights Commission

Join us in advocating for a healthier, safer future for young women in Malawi!
